Foam Soap vs Lotion Soap Dispensers — Which Platform Is Best for Your Business?

5 min read

Choosing between foam and lotion soap is one of the first decisions in specifying a commercial washroom. Both are effective hand cleaners, but they differ in cost per wash, user experience, water usage, and available features. Draco manufactures both — so this comparison is about helping you find the right fit, not selling one over the other.

Side-by-Side Comparison

When to Choose Foam

  • Cost reduction. Foam uses less product per wash. Over thousands of washes per month, the savings add up.
  • Water conservation. Foam rinses faster with less water. Important for sustainability goals or drought-prone regions.
  • Modern washroom feel. Foam dispensers are perceived as more modern and premium by users.
  • ADA compliance needed. Only the foam platform (0.8ml) has dedicated ADA models (4" max protrusion).
  • Sealed cartridge preferred. Eversoft sealed foam cartridges are available in 0.8ml platform.

When to Choose Lotion

  • Users expect traditional liquid soap. Some facilities and cultures prefer the feel of liquid soap.
  • Need spray sanitizer from the same dispenser. Long Tube dispensers do both lotion AND spray — just swap the pump.
  • Portable sanitation. Long Tube system with bag-in-box is the industry standard for portable restrooms.
  • Industrial or heavy-duty cleaning. Long Tube handles heavier viscosity products. The 1500 (5000ml, 2ml per push) handles industrial hand cleaner.
  • Gallon refill currently in use. If the facility already refills from gallon jugs, they're on a lotion system. Upgrade path: switch to sealed Eversoft cartridges for hygiene without replacing dispensers.

The Hygiene Upgrade Opportunity

If a customer is currently refilling dispensers from gallon soap containers, they're vulnerable to contamination. Research shows bulk refillable soap dispensers harbor bacteria over time.

The pitch: "You can keep the same dispenser and switch to sealed Eversoft cartridges. No hardware change, just swap the cartridge. Eliminates cross-contamination."

This applies to both foam (0.8ml platform) and lotion (Long Tube platform). The 0.4ml platform does not have sealed Eversoft cartridges.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the same dispenser do both foam and lotion?

Within the 0.8ml platform, yes — the same dispenser housing works with foam pumps and lotion pumps. Swap the pump to change the output. However, a 0.8ml dispenser cannot accept a Long Tube pump, and vice versa.

What about gel soap?

Gel has a similar viscosity to lotion. Use the Short Tube or Long Tube platform with a lotion pump.

Is "liquid soap" foam or lotion?

In the industry, "liquid" usually means lotion (thick, traditional). "Spray" means thin, watery. "Foam" is its own category. If a customer says "liquid" — ask: "Do you mean spray (thin, watery) or lotion (thicker)?"

Can I switch from lotion to foam without replacing dispensers?

No. Foam and lotion use different platforms and different pumps. However, within each platform, you can switch between consumable types (sealed vs. refillable vs. OEM) without replacing the dispenser. ---
